Self-Reliant

Build independence. Strengthen your skills. Become a more capable diver.

The PADI Self-Reliant Diver Specialty is designed for experienced divers who want to develop the skills, discipline and awareness needed to become more self-sufficient underwater.

While diving with a buddy remains an important part of recreational diving, becoming a stronger self-reliant diver means learning to plan for situations where you may need to depend on your own skills and equipment.

With Dirty Adventures Scuba, this course takes a practical approach to dive planning, redundancy, gas management and problem-solving underwater.

During three training dives, you’ll work on:

  • Self-reliant dive planning and risk management
  • Redundant equipment and equipment configuration
  • Carrying and using an independent redundant gas source
  • Advanced gas planning and consumption calculations
  • Navigation and situational awareness
  • Deploying a DSMB from depth
  • Managing simulated equipment problems
  • Developing the discipline and judgment required for self-reliant diving

This course is about more than learning to dive independently. The skills you develop can make you a stronger, more prepared and more capable buddy on every dive.

Because Self-Reliant Diver is an advanced specialty, divers must meet PADI eligibility and experience requirements, including being at least 18 years old, holding a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification or qualifying equivalent, having at least 100 logged dives, and completing a skills assessment with the instructor.

Booked on demand: Self-Reliant Diver training is arranged based on student availability, instructor approval and appropriate diving conditions. Contact Dirty Adventures Scuba to discuss the course and determine whether you’re ready to get started.

Plan for yourself. Rely on your skills. Become a stronger diver.
