A Delayed Surface Marker Buoy (DSMB) is an important piece of dive equipment — particularly when boat diving, drift diving, making blue-water ascents or surfacing away from your planned exit point. But carrying one and knowing how to deploy it safely are two very different things.

During two training dives, you’ll work on:
- Choosing and setting up a DSMB and reel or spool
- Preparing your DSMB for deployment
- Safely deploying a DSMB from underwater
- Managing the line and avoiding entanglement
- Maintaining buoyancy and position during deployment
- Controlling the reel or spool as the DSMB ascends
- Using a DSMB during ascent and safety stops
- Common problems and how to avoid them
It sounds like a simple skill — until you’re trying to manage a spool, maintain your depth, watch your buddy and send a buoy to the surface at the same time. Learning the proper technique and practicing it under supervision makes all the difference.
